The gambling market often represents a significant source of income for the state, thanks to the high taxes that are imposed on the industry.
That is why, especially in times of crisis, states often try to take advantage of this sector by implementing liberalisations and sanctioning the construction of huge gambling resorts – we have regularly informed you about these projects, e.g. here and here.
Thus, governments are not particularly willing to let go of the millions that the gambling industry pays in the form of taxation.
For example, the Swedish Tax Agency has announced that it plans to request nearly €10.2 million from Netent, which is listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange, for its activities between 2007 and 2010.
The online casino software developer has announced that it would dispute this request and will appeal the decision once this becomes final.
The final decision by the Swedish Tax Agency is expected before the end of the year.
