Holland plans to regulate the online gambling industry

11/21/12

The global economic crisis is currently affecting many parts of the world.
In an attempt to tackle the recession, some countries have tried to rely on the gambling industry.
In particular, this is the case of Spain and the project EuroVegas – which has been mentioned here and here – as well as the case of Greece, where the monopoly of the company OPAP on sports betting has been extended.
This time around it is Holland’s turn. The country hopes that the draft regulation of the online gambling market will generate 30 million euros in tax revenues and will help it recover from this difficult economic situation.
Currently under discussion, the draft provides for a 29% tax rate and could come into force in January 2013.
In addition, the country wants to privatise Holland Casino, which currently holds a monopoly.
