Physics may help you make a fortune at the roulette table

Generally speaking, when scientists show an interest for gambling is because they wish to talk about addiction.
We have regularly mentioned various studies on this subject, such as in this article.
Nevertheless, it sometimes happens that researchers get involved with gambling itself.
In particular, this was the case of the French mathematician Jean le Rond D’Alembert, who developed a strategy for playing roulette – explained here – which is named after him.
We can also cite the example of Roger Baldwin, who published the principles of a basic blackjack strategy in a statistics magazine.
We mentioned him in our history of blackjack.
This time, some Australian physicists may help you make a fortune at the roulette table.
In a study recently published in the very authoritative journal Chaos, they developed two methods that can reverse the odds in favour of the player, by applying certain laws of physics to the game.
The first technique is based on the observation of the position of the ivory ball and of the croupier to determine where the ball might stop.
On European roulette, the results are extraordinary, as the 2.7% house edge that characterises the game is turned into a 20% edge in favour of the player.
Obviously, when playing American roulette this percentage decreases slightly, which is due to the presence of the double zero pocket.
The second method is much more complex to use, but it is also much more effective – it requires that a camera is placed above the roulette wheel in order to obtain the same data required by the other technique, but with greater precision. You also need to be aware that a slightly unbalanced table will give you an even greater advantage.
Although this study sounds really great, we must admit that the techniques involved are very difficult to use, especially as they require the knowledge of a great amount of information on the conditions in which the game is played.
Moreover, the study should not be regarded as a panacea, as it will not protect you against possible losses.
Thus, it is necessary to have a large sum of money to be able to take advantage of this strategy.
Nevertheless, despite these reservations, the results of this study may enable some players with a talent for physics to make a good fortune from playing roulette.
