Jamaica could legalise the market for online games

06/12/14

Jamaïque

Last March, Jamaica issued the first license for the construction of a land based casino in the country.
The country seems to be determined to continue this trend, and it could soon legalise online gambling as well.
Supporters of the project believe that this could allow the state to get significant tax revenues, which would be helpful in times of the global economic crisis.
Whatever happens, the draft law is currently before the Parliament.
Gary Peart, the president of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC) says that online gambling is already very popular in the country.
The Jamaicans are currently spending more than 250 million dollars in this sector.
He believes that the market could increase by 15-30% over the next 4 years after the law has passed, and it will generate significant revenues through taxation for the government.
Moreover, such a measure would aid the fight against money laundering, and help protecting minors and people with gambling addictions.
