Hungary plans to expand the scope of its online gambling laws

In 2011, the Hungarian government worked on a project to liberalise its online gambling market.
The legislation, which was implemented the following year, enables operators to apply for licences to offer some card games as well as horse betting.
A plan to expand the scope of this law has recently been presented.
This seeks to legalise sports betting and online casino games, which would be subject to a 20% tax rate on turnover.
The licences would be issued for a period of five years – it has yet to be determined how many licences will be issued.
At the same time, the Hungarian regulator has put in place a series of measure that aim at fighting against illegal websites.
A blacklist has been published and an obligation imposed on ISPs – which will otherwise incur penalties – to block access to sites that are on the list.
