Blacklist of indebted players creates scandal in Macao

10/01/13

Macao

To promote an attitude of responsible gambling, no French casino is authorized to lend credit to its players.
This ban does not exist in many other parts of the world, like Macao, for example, where the gambling establishments don’t hesitate to advance significant sums of money to their best clients.
Although these loans tend to be repaid quickly enough for the most part, from time to time, players allow them to drag on.
What’s more, a website operated from Singapore has recently published a blacklist revealing around 70 names belonging to debt-ridden high rollers, accompanied by photographs and personal information.
Additionally, the site is offering a reward of up to 30,000 dollars to anyone who can aid in finding these players.
In all, these players owe more than 46 million dollars to several casinos in Macao.
A dozen of them have already repaid what they owed, around 4 million dollars, which has permitted them to disappear from the notorious list.
Naturally, the list has led to scandal, particularly because it is completely illegal.
As a result, the website in question is currently the object of a judicial investigation led by the Macao police.
