A bill to liberalise the Australian market

In 6 to 12 months’ time, online gambling could be liberalised in Australia, due to a controversial bill proposed by the centre-left Labor Party.  The federal government led by Prime Minister Julia Gillard is currently working on the proposal.
Even though Australian players can already bet by phone, in the future they will be able to do it on the Internet, without having to register to a foreign website that is also illegal in the country.
In addition, the State could raise up to $300 million a year in taxes thanks to the liberalisation of the market.
At the moment, only the liberalisation of sports betting and online poker seems to be under consideration, although a recent report by the Gambling Reform Committee has recommended not to legalise these online gambling games.
